Fishing & Shell Fishing

Wellfleet is known for its abundance of shellfish, including
the famous Wellfleet Oyster. At low tides in Wellfleet, quahogs,
soft shell clams, and oysters are harvested along the beaches.
Seasonal recreational shellfishing permits, valid from June through
September, cost $40 for non-residents and can be obtained from
the Shellfish Department at the Town Pier (508-349-0300). During
the summer, recreational shellfishing is only permitted at Indian
Neck on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Wellfleet's freshwater ponds are stocked with several varieties
of trout, joining native perch, large and smallmouth bass, pickerel
and sunfish. Gull, Great and Long Ponds are the largest and most
accessible. Fishing licenses are not required for saltwater fishing;
freshwater anglers age 15 and up can obtain licenses at Town
Hall. Always check Fish & Game Regulations for species size
limits and quantity.
Striped Bass are plentiful in Cape Cod Bay and off the backside
beaches especially in the fall where you can catch a 50 pound+
striper.
